As you may have noticed, my website/blog has been down for the past few weeks.  I switched to a new host, and haven’t taken the time to work through the transfer until now.

Short update, eh?  For now…

Mom and I spent last week at home in rural Quebec.  One spring tradition is making maple syrup.  We were privileged to visit one sugar camp to see their high-tech process involving reverse-osmosis and old fashioned boiling in very modern equipment:

…I would probably try this from the Wired How-To Wiki:

Supercharge Your Camera with Open-Source CHDK Firmware

Looks to be quite something if it works!  Hmmm, I wonder if they have anything similar for Nikon or Pentax?

I know I’m far behind the times in utilizing Flickr, but have now added a Flickr widget to my sidebar, over there —->>

I’m planning to use the Flickr features more frequently in the future. :-)

This afternoon I came across this new trial technology that had been discussed on CBC’s Quirks & Quarks program:

On Saturday I heard an interesting program on our national radio service, CBC.  MIT has a technology available on their site that allows the user to enter a text query to search within specific audio lectures.  I think this could prove very useful when it becomes more widely available:

MIT Lecture Browser

Here’s a short video I put together using footage from our snowmobiling last weekend:

This also marks my first upload to YouTube :-)

While looking for a Week # reference site this week, I found a graphical display of the day/night zones around the world.  For example, here’s what it looks like around 9pm EST on Jan 12, 2008:

Speaking of dates and times, hopefully less than a fortnight will pass before I post again!

Somehow I only became aware of these two services on Saturday!  Both Microsoft and Google offer toll-free #’s with voice-activated business search capabilities.  Without further ado:

Microsoft Live Search 411:
1-800-CALL-411

Google GOOG411:
1-800-GOOG-411

Basically you can call the toll-free number, say the city and state, then say the business name/category, and say the number of the search a result to hear details about the business (phone #, street address). The service can then connect you for free, or SMS the details, ect.

Microsoft’s also offers weather and travel options. However, perhaps it’s my Canadian accent or something, but even after multiple tries at accessing “Weather”, the system still couldn’t understand what I wanted!

Last evening Cameron and I drove a short distance to a beach overlooking “Little Lake” McDonald to photograph the moon rising.
